New routes from July 2009
United Airways (BD) Limited, the country’s leading private airline, will start flying on Dhaka–Dubai route from July 10 2009 to carry passengers from Bangladesh.
United Airways has been allowed to fly international routes in a major boost to country’s fledgling aviation industry. “We have already obtained the permission from Dubai Civil Aviation Authority to operate the route and our own MD-83 having 160 seats including 8 business class seats is joining the fleet by June 26 and will fly to Dubai from July 10, 2009. Our one more MD-83 having same seat configuration will be added to the fleet of United Airways to fly on Dhaka–Kuala Lumpur, Dhaka–Kathmandu and Dhaka–Bangkok routes.” Capt. Tasbirul Ahmed Choudhury, Chairman and Managing Director, United Airways told.
United Airways BD Limited has already obtained permission from the Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh to operate 7 flights to Dubai, 3 flights to Bangkok, 3 flights to Kuala Lumpur, 4 flights to Kathmandu. United Airways (BD) Limited started its journey on July 10th 2007. The airline is operating flights to all major domestic sectors from Dhaka since 2007 including regional destination Kolkatta, India.
United Airways BD Limited, 95% owned by expatriates Bangladeshi plans to operate two regional routes: Canton, China and Yangon, Myanmar by the end of 2009.
Capt. Tasbir said, “The allocation of more flight frequencies for the private airlines was due to a change in the government policy, as it seeks to inject competition in the aviation industry. The government is now very liberal. Government is encouraging the private sector to have its share of the growing market and we must be ready to face competition and should improve our service quality. Bangladesh’s air traffic grew 7.3 percent last year, making it one of the fastest – growing aviation markets in the region, but decades of poor performance by the other airlines has enabled foreign carriers to snatch almost 80 per cent of the market. Government decision proves that it wants a level playing field in the aviation industry. We will soon procure Boeing 767-300 ER to fly to other Gulf and European destinations including London. UK and Gulf is the most important market for Bangladeshi airlines as one in two people who fly abroad goes to the six Gulf countries and UK, which employ more than 70 percent of the county’s over five million migrant workers. World’s sixth largest airline Emirates at present carries the bulk of the traffic between Dhaka, Dubai and UK. Emirates operate 17 flights a week and will soon add two more. There are also several other top Gulf carriers operating in these routes.”
Capt. Choudhury said, “We shall make all endeavors to achieve a reasonable market share within a short span of time and thus retain the hard earned foreign currency in the country and also contribute in the national economy.”
